A dozer pushes material ahead of it with a blade. It's used to clear, grade and prep ground over large areas.

A track loader, on the other hand, scoops and carries material with a bucket. On the same job site, the two often work hand in hand: the dozer opens and grades, the loader fills the trucks.

Go by operating weight rather than model number, which varies from one brand to the next.

Around 8 to 10 tonnes covers landscaping, access roads and small lots. From 13 to 20 tonnes, you're into site clearing, road building and forestry work. Beyond that, it's quarry work and mass earthmoving.

A straight blade moves the most material in a straight push. It's the pick for pure bulk earthmoving.

A 6-way blade, also called a PAT blade, tilts and angles from the cab. It's the most versatile: grading, ditching, slope work, bank shaping. If you do a bit of everything, it's almost always the right call.

These suffixes refer to the track configuration. A standard version suits firm ground and stays the most manoeuvrable in tight spaces.

The long-track and wide-track versions, LT and LGP, spread the weight over a larger footprint and sink much less. That's what you need on soft ground, wet terrain or forest roads.

A well-maintained dozer routinely goes past 10,000 hours. So the hour meter matters less than the service history and the condition of the undercarriage.

The machines we put up for sale generally sit between 3,000 and 6,000 hours, the sweet spot with plenty of working life left without paying new-machine prices.

The undercarriage first, because it's by far the biggest cost item on this type of machine: tracks, rollers, sprockets, carrier rollers and track tension. We measure wear and show it to you clearly, with no rounding.
